Mending

winter.
a time for mending. healing.
transforming.
finding our source.
sleeping.
in sleep we gather strength.

we won't know until Spring.

Loved and Lost

It's been a long week. The coming of Christmas makes me cry a lot. I cry for all that I have loved and lost. It is true what they say: you don't know what you've got until it's gone.
And this week a young bear tore down five of my hawthorne trees. I had them for years. They were a magnificent part of my home. A four season tree. And in one night, the bear ripped and tore at the branches, consuming tiny berries that sustain the native birds for the winter.
Already this winter is looking fierce.
And Dark.
And sadness looms over me.
And yet I tend to find great creativity in the depths of my sorrows. Perhaps it is what I use to climb out.
I am waiting on two more skeins of yarn to arrrive in the mail so I can finish my Aunt's Christmas present. And meanwhile, I will finish a cuff that was custom ordered. I will post photos tomorrow.
Stay warm.

Coming Along

My shawl is coming along nicely. I tied a red thread to the front -it helps when starting out to keep the right side known, until it becomes obvious.

I've also been working on my dye pot:

From the top: Hawthorne berries, Artemesia flower heads, avocado pits, dyed cloth.

Knitting Shawls

As i jump around in my work....i usually have a couple projects going at once... Today i want to share a great little video on how to start knitting shawls. The one thing that has always kept me from knitting them is that triangular start where the pattern says "turn 90 degrees and pick up stitches"...What the heck does that mean?  So...i Googled it.

Google tells me it's called the garter stitch cast on method. It forms the point in the triangular shawl. i found this great little video that demonstrates it. He makes it look so easy!

Free Again

These beautiful, tiny buttons have not seen the light of day since they were packed away last century.
Oh, to be free again!

the light that shines

Tyger Tyger burning bright,
In the forests of the night:
What immortal hand or eye,
Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?

When the stars threw down their spears
And water'd heaven with their tears:
Did he smile his work to see?
Did he who made the Lamb make thee?

seeking sunshine

there's a lot of sunshine outside.
but i'm seeking sunshine inside.
i thought i would add it to my cabin.

and then there are those buttons....
buttons are attachments.
to house and home and friends.

and the center is red.
because that is where my heart is.
through the layers
and with my friends.
